The Importance of Stress in Our Lives
This week’s discussion was on the family and the effect that stress can have on it. Though stress is most often thought of as a predominantly bad thing, stress is also important to help us become stronger and better than we currently are. Despite this growing from stress only happens when we use the correct coping skills.
There are many things that can cause stress in our everyday lives: work, school, expenses, and many other stress-causing experiences. Stress can be big or small depending on the cause and the overall effect that it has on the family. It is important to know that not all forms of stress are equal to each other. The death of a child is said to be one of the most stressful experiences that people go through, while the stress of a child playing in the mud can be quickly overcome. Because of these stressors that occur it is important to be able to cope effectively with them for the health of a person's marriage and family.
When stress comes into our lives we naturally do something to try and relieve that stress, but sometimes the coping mechanisms that we have are not the most effective. When people choose to be in denial about what has happened then they are not actually coming to teams with the effects from whatever it is that is causing stress in their life. They are hiding from it instead of facing it and making sure that it is worked out with the family as well. Another unhelpful coping method is avoidance. This is when you are not denying that there is a stressor, but choose to avoid it and not spend any of your time thinking about it. A third ineffective coping method is when the cause of the stress is incorrectly placed on the shoulders of someone else making it so that we blame them even though whatever happened is probably not their fault. This is a bad method because it can push away people who care about you and potentially push away those that you should be working with to get back to a place that is ok.
Some effective coping methods are taking responsibility for where things are, doing your best to make sure that every member of your family feels their worth, balancing your concerns with the concerns of others, and being able to reframe. When responsibility is taken then issues can be worked out and actions can be taken to continue to resolve or find the needed solution. In our family units when something happens, spouses and kids can sometimes feel that they are to blame or that it was somehow their fault, so it is important for the parents to know how each person feels about a situation. Another important method is to make sure that while each of us takes care of ourselves that we don’t become so self-focused that we are not able to help those around us get over the events. The last method is reframing. The ability to reframe, to step away from and look at things in a different way, can help us better see where the problems are and how to effectively take care of our family and solve these issues.
It is so important to be able to effectively cope with the stress that will come into our lives. Stress is important, it helps us be grounded, but if we don’t use it to build our families then it can be the event that tears are families apart. When we hide from our problems they don’t go away. The only thing that goes away is our ability to when we are past the most stressful moments of that time in our lives. The biggest thing that we can lose if we ignore stress is our family, and that is the one thing that everyone wants to save.
